What’s the most rewarding thing about your work?
If you want a sense of achievement, this is one sure way of achieving that, the way firms are able to improve systems and processes with our support is incredible. Raising awareness of risk, training and advice are critical elements of our involvement with firms. Over the years I have built up a lovely client base and am regarded as one of the team within all my firms.
Further, regulatory requirements constantly shift and evolve, which requires a continual need to grow our skills and knowledge, which makes the job challenging and ever evolving.
I am regularly meeting with new firms who have decided to challenge their own internal systems and process with those required of them, by asking Legal Eye to carry out an independent audit of same, the results are always enlightening for firms and often shocking – however my approach is always to put firms at ease and advise step by step how I can help.
I have built up strong relationships with my clients, many of whom I have worked with for numerous years, they regard the support and advice I provide as a commodity the firm simply could not do without, this makes my role rewarding. I have great working relationships with all my clients and I have assisted many of these in achieving various accreditations such as Lexcel, CQS, for some of them simply having compliant risk management procedures has been a challenge and seeing how these have improved the firms systems is remarkable.
If you hadn’t become a risk and compliance expert what would you have done instead?
An Astronaut, but the job involved long distance travel which I could not cope with. To be honest I always wanted to be solicitor and I have found the skill set transferrable within this role.
